Privacy Policy

What we collect, why, who can see it, and how to control it.

Effective and last updated October 1, 2026

Overview

This Privacy Policy explains how SocialSpot (“SocialSpot,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses and shares information when you use the SocialSpot mobile app (the “App”) and this website (together, the “Services”). By using the Services you agree to this policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Services.

The short version: we collect what we need to run a location-based social app, and nothing else. We don’t sell your personal information, we don’t show third-party ads, and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites. Your location is shared only while you choose to share it.

Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account information: your email address and sign-in details. If you use Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive a unique account identifier and the name and email that provider shares (which may be an Apple private relay address).
  • Profile information: display name, birthday (used to calculate the age shown on your profile; the date itself isn’t shown), school, bio, profile photo, and the usernames of social accounts you choose to link.
  • Reports and support messages: information you send when you report a user or contact support.

Information collected when you use the App

  • Precise location: only while Share Location is on and you have granted iOS location permission. Used to show you on the map to nearby users and to show you who’s nearby.
  • Photos and camera: only the specific photo you choose or take for your profile. We don’t access the rest of your library.
  • Technical and log data: basic records our infrastructure providers create to operate and secure the service, such as IP address, request timestamps, device and app version, and error logs.

When you visit this website

  • Waitlist: if you join the waitlist, we collect your email address and use it only to tell you about the SocialSpot launch.
  • Website usage: this website doesn’t use advertising trackers or cookies for analytics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-focused, cookie-free service, to count page views. Our host (Cloudflare) also processes standard request data such as IP address and browser type to deliver the site and protect it from abuse.

How we use information

  • To provide the App: create your account, show your profile, and show nearby users on the map and in the Nearby list
  • To keep the community safe: review reports, enforce our Community Guidelines, and prevent fraud, spam and abuse
  • To secure and improve the Services: diagnose bugs, monitor performance, and protect against attacks
  • To communicate with you: verification emails, responses to support requests, and important notices about the Services
  • To comply with legal obligations

We don’t use your information for third-party advertising, and we don’t make automated decisions about you that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

What other users can see

While Share Location is on, other SocialSpot users within the discovery range (about 500 feet) can see your profile photo, display name, age, school, bio, linked social usernames, your approximate distance from them, and your position on their map. Turn Share Location off to stop appearing immediately. People you block can’t see you. Please only share information you’re comfortable with nearby strangers seeing.

How we share information

We do not sell or share (as those terms are defined under California law) your personal information. We disclose it only:

  • With other users, as described in “What other users can see”
  • With service providers who process data on our behalf under contract:
ProviderPurpose
SupabaseAuthentication, database, profile photo storage, waitlist emails
AppleSign in with Apple, maps (MapKit), App Store distribution
GoogleSign in with Google
CloudflareWebsite hosting, security and cookie-free page analytics
  • For legal reasons: when required by law or legal process, or to protect the safety of any person
  • In a business transfer: if SocialSpot is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, subject to this policy

How long we keep information

  • Location: deleted when you turn off Share Location, and automatically expired after a short time-to-live if it isn’t refreshed
  • Account and profile: kept until you delete your account
  • Waitlist email: kept until shortly after launch, or until you ask us to remove it
  • Backups: deleted data may remain in encrypted backups for up to 30 days
  • Safety records: limited records about serious guideline violations or bans may be kept longer to prevent repeat abuse, or where the law requires

Your choices and rights

  • Location: turn Share Location on or off in the App, or change location permission in iOS Settings at any time
  • Access and correct: view and edit your profile in the App, or ask us for a copy of your data
  • Delete: delete your account in the App or by following the steps on our account deletion page

Depending on where you live (for example California, other US states, the EEA or the UK), you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete or port your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights. Email us to make a request. We’ll verify your identity using your account email and respond within the time the law requires. You can also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Security

We protect your information with encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), database row-level security so users can only access their own records, validated file uploads, secrets kept out of the App’s code, and automatic expiry of location data. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password and tell us right away if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.

Children

SocialSpot is only for people who are 18 or older. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we will delete it. If you believe a minor is using SocialSpot, please contact us.

International users

SocialSpot is operated from the United States, and our service providers may process data in the United States and other countries. By using the Services you understand your information will be processed there, where data protection laws may differ from those where you live.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the Services change. We’ll post the new version here with a new “Last updated” date and, for material changes, let you know in the App or by email before they take effect.
